I’ve shared on here before that I was a very picky eater growing up. As you can imagine, I steered clear of guacamole as a child. From its bright green color to its chunky texture, nothing about it looked appealing to me. As a now self-proclaimed avocado enthusiast, I can’t believe how many years I wasted not eating guacamole. It is truly one of my absolute favorite foods and a staple in my diet.
One of the most fun things about guacamole is that there are so many different ways to make it! Each restaurant varies so much, from the spices it uses to the unique flavors they add. Whenever I see guacamole on the menu I simply have to order it. Below are the instructions for my own simple guacamole recipe. I’m curious to hear what your favorite ingredient to add to guac is!
Ingredients Needed
To make this easy and simple guacamole recipe yourself at home, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Avocados: The one essential ingredient in any guacamole recipe is ripe avocados. It’s important to ensure the avocados are ripe, so they’ll be easy to mash. To find avocados that are the perfect amount of ripeness I first look at the outside color. Ripe avocados will have a darker green almost black colored shell. They will also be mushy when you squeeze the outside. For this recipe, we’ll need 2 ripe avocados.
- Red onion: I love adding finely chopped red onion to my guacamole. For this recipe, I recommend adding 1/4 of a medium-sized red onion. You can add more or less based on your taste preference.
- Minced garlic: I believe the best kinds of people are the ones who can’t get enough garlic! Garlic is an essential ingredient in this recipe. You’ll need 2 cloves of minced garlic. However, in my opinion, there is no such thing as too much when it comes to garlic.
- Lime: Freshly squeezed lime juice gives this recipe the perfect citrus taste just like what you’d order at a restaurant. You’ll need one ripe lime for this recipe.
- Oregano: I’d like to think oregano is the secret ingredient in my recipe. I’ve been told it’s added to more traditional recipes of guacamole. You’ll only need a 1/2 tsp for this recipe, but it makes a big difference in the taste.
- Salt: To really tie together all of the flavors in this recipe you’ll need a 1/2 tsp of salt.
- Pepper: Finally, we’ll finish off this recipe with just a pinch of freshly ground pepper.
How to Make this Simple Guacamole Recipe
Follow the step by step instructions below to make this recipe at home:
First, in a large bowl, use a fork to mash avocados well until well mashed with some chunks.
Then, stir the remaining ingredients into the mashed avocados until well combined.
Finally, serve with tortilla chips and veggies. My favorite tortilla chips are the grain-free Siete brand chips.

Do I need an avocado masher?
No, you don’t! As I mentioned in the instructions, if you’re using ripe avocados, a fork should suffice for mashing the avocados. If you have a molcajete (avocado masher) feel free to use it! It’s definitely on my wishlist since I love making my guacamole, but definitely not necessary for making delicious guacamole at home.
Making flavored guacamole
One fun trend I’ve seen over the past few years is creative flavored guacamole recipes. I’ve found that one of the easiest ways to make flavored guacamole like mango or pineapple flavored is to add in flavored salsa. For example, if I wanted to make mango-flavored guacamole, simply follow the recipe above and then stir in some mango-flavored salsa. This is one of the easiest ways to amp up your guacamole game and impress your guests with minimal effort!
