It’s officially that time of the year. The nights are growing darker and colder, you can’t go outside without a coat, and the first snow is right around the corner. That’s right, it’s soup season! I don’t know about you, but during the winter I crave soup every week. One of my all-time favorite soups to make is french onion soup.
This homemade french onion soup is so delicious you’ll be shocked that it’s free of dairy and alcohol. French onion soup is traditionally made with lots of butter and white wine. To make this recipe a little healthier and more gut-friendly, I made a dairy-free and alcohol-free version.
One thing I struggled with when I first started this blog was the idea that I might not have enough recipe ideas or content to write about. While I’m still very new to this, I’ve found a lot of entertainment in coming up with recipes I’d like to recreate for the blog. French onion soup has been a favorite dish of mine since I was in high school. I used to put on my swim goggles to cut the onions back then so I wouldn’t cry. I didn’t opt to wear the goggles this time around, but that flashback made me realize we have so many memories and stories attached to food. It brings us together. It can frustrate us, make us cry (thanks onions), and bring us joy and comfort. I’m realizing that each dish has its inspiration, funny anecdote, and success or failure story associated with it that is waiting to be shared.

Recipe Tips
Answering your homemade french onion soup recipe questions:
Can I make this recipe vegan?
Yes! Because this recipe is already dairy-free, the only swap you’d need to make this recipe vegan is replacing the beef bone broth with vegetable broth. I like using bone broth for immune system support, but vegetable broth should also taste great in this recipe.
Coconut sugar swaps
For those who don’t regularly cook with coconut sugar, purchasing a whole bag of it for this recipe might not seem practical. If you don’t have any coconut sugar on hand and don’t want to buy some for this recipe, you can replace it with regular sugar and that will taste great as well.
