Is there anything better on a cold winter day than a cozy cup of hot chocolate? I have so many memories as a kid of warming up with a cup of hot chocolate at freezing cold soccer games and on snow days.
Once we pass the age of 16 it seems everyone’s hot drink of choice gravitates towards coffee. However, in my opinion, it’s nice to mix it up and throw in a sweet drink every once in a while. It has already started to cool off here in Maine, so I started craving my favorite warm comfort drink, hot chocolate. Unfortunately traditional hot chocolate is loaded with sugar and dairy, so I knew picking up a packet at the local grocery store wouldn’t be an option. This easy 3 ingredient hot chocolate recipe had everything I was looking for in a mug of hot cocoa and it immediately hit the spot.
Not only is this recipe easy to make with ingredients you most likely already have on hand; it still gives you that warm and sweet chocolatey flavor minus all of the added sugar and dairy.
Ingredients Needed
This recipe is so simple and only require three ingredients!
- Cocoa powder
- Almond milk
- Honey
All of these combined with some hot water makes the 3 ingredient hot chocolate recipe. It’s so quick and easy you’ll be tempted to make it on repeat all fall and winter long.
Equipment Required
This recipe is so effortless the only equipment really required would be a tablespoon measurer and a microwave. I usually use my Keurig to boil the hot water for this recipe, but you could use the microwave to heat up both the almond milk and the water. Additionally, if you don’t have a microwave, this recipe could be made in a saucepan on the stove. Whatever you have available to you should work perfectly!
Recipe Tips
Answering your 3 ingredient hot chocolate recipe questions.
Can I replace the type of milk in the hot chocolate?
Absolutely! My mom really likes to make this recipe with soy milk, which also tastes great. You could use oat milk if you’d like your hot chocolate to have a creamier consistency, or regular milk if you’re not dairy free. Almond milk is always my milk of choice, but again it all comes down to personal preference.
Can I switch out the honey for a different sweetener?
Yes! This recipe also tastes great when sweetened with maple syrup. I’ve never tried using agave syrup or plain sugar, but I imagine both of those would taste wonderful as well.
Do you recommend a certain brand of cocoa powder?
I usually use the Ghirardelli brand of cocoa powder for this recipe. I find it to be very rich in flavor, and it does not have any added sugar. When looking for a cocoa powder, make sure there is only one ingredient. A quality cocoa powder doesn’t require any additional additives. I’ve also tried the Trader Joe’s cocoa powder and had great results.
What do you recommend for mix-ins?
As pictured above, you can’t go wrong with mini marshmallows. I’m dying to try Danielle Walker’s homemade marshmallow recipe to go along with this hot chocolate. You can also add cinnamon, chocolate chips, and whipped cream for some additional sweetness.
