Do you ever think about how much we, as a society, have changed over the past 10 years? One of my favorite videos is of the Jonas Brothers on James Corden singing a spoof of their song the Year 3000 about the year 2019. In this new version of the song, the Jonas Brothers list all of the surprising changes we’ve made in 2019 since 2009. One of the changes they mention is all the different kinds of milk we’re drinking now. From cashew to almond to oat milk, I think the 2009 versions of ourselves would be floored by all of the options.
While almond milk may be a fairly new thing, over the past ten years it has become a staple in my morning routine. Almond milk is the perfect addition to coffee, and my homemade hot chocolate recipe, I’m not sure where I’d be without the delicious dairy-free milk option. One common misconception about almond milk is that it’s difficult to make and can only be bought at the store. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Homemade almond milk is so simple to make and only requires two ingredients: almonds and water.
I’ve found making my own almond milk at home to be a game-changer. Not only is it more cost-effective, but I also don’t have to worry about any hidden sugars or additives. If you’re a fan of almond milk, I highly encourage you to follow the steps below to make your own. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with just how easy it is.

Cheesecloth substitutes
If you don’t have a cheesecloth, you can also use a thin dish towel to strain the almond pulp. I have been using a dish towel to make my almond milk and haven’t experienced any difficulty without a cheesecloth. Just make sure your towel is clean before using.
Adding flavor
I like my almond milk to be unflavored. However, with the holidays quickly approaching I know many enjoy adding flavored creamers to their coffees. You can add peppermint or pumpkin flavoring to create flavored almond milk. I have been wanting to try adding dates and vanilla to make a sweetened vanilla version. If you wind up using a flavoring please let me know how it turned out!
